Upson County
is the southernmost in the McIntosh Trail Region, roughly
40 miles west of Macon and 50 miles northeast of Columbus. Thomaston,
the county seat, has benefited from this location, developing into the
largest economic center between those two cities. This boom, along
with the county’s proximity to attractions like Warm Springs and Callaway
Gardens, helped Thomaston gain recognition in the 1996 version of "The
100 Best Small Towns in America".
Growth in the area industry and
improvements to the industrial park have also added to the county’s recent
economic prosperity. The resulting increase of residents has helped
foster improvements to the local hospital, Flint River Tech, and the Thomaston-Upson
Airport. Two other road projects are scheduled by the Georgia D.O.T.
which will improve access to the county.
