Butts County comprises the region’s northeastern tip, just outside of the wave of growth that is metropolitan Atlanta.  The county lies approximately 40 miles south of Atlanta and 45 miles north of Macon, with direct access to the county’s west side from Interstate 75.  This accessibility has helped Butts County grow as a target for development, prompting major renovations to the I-75 - Ga 36 Interchange.  Residential growth within the county has also been supported by the attractions of Indian Springs State Park, Jackson Lake, and neighboring High Falls State Park.  The history of Butts County and the Indian Springs Hotel are the source behind the region’s namesake, reaching back to the early 1800’s.  The City of Jackson is the county seat, with an estimated 1990 population of 4,076.
